Along with Bamboo & Mycelium, Hemp is another hot organic fabric for FunGuyz. This is due to its versatile and sustainable fibre that requires minimal water and no pesticides to grow. It’s known for its historical durability, breathability, and natural resistance to mould and UV light. Hemp is being used increasingly more & more in the eco-friendly fashion industry due to its strength and minimal environmental footprint. The usage of hemp in textiles dates back to approximately 8,000 B.C., and its usage extends far beyond that of solely fashion. Check out Textile Today for more green content.

Bamboo, another key area of research for FunGuyz, is renowned for its resilient nature of growing independently without the need for harmful fertilisers and pesticides thanks to its natural antibacterial properties.
This impressive eco-friendly fibre is highly renewable, with its cultivation requiring less water due to bamboo fibres being soft and highly absorbent. This makes it an excellent choice for sustainable clothing.
There are current difficulties with the chemical processes involved in extracting the fibre from the plants stems themselves, however initiatives such as India’s National Bamboo Mission and other certifications like FSC & OEKO-TEX are looking to find ways at overcoming this.

Mycelium is a fascinating topic for FunGuyz and one we are passionate on exploring more of. As the root structure of fungi itself, it is a resilient organism emerging as a sustainable alternative in fashion and other worldwide projects. It is biodegradable, strong, and flexible, with the potential to replace leather and synthetic fabrics in the future. Mycelium-based materials are not only environmentally friendly but also offer unique textures and properties that are gaining attention in the growing world of sustainable fashion.
Companies like my-fi are promoting mycelium not only for its benefits in textiles but also its ability to stem from industries waste residue. Through composting, we can utilise fungi’s natural ability to break down molecules through their powerful enzymes, which in return help us form a sustainable method of farming this crop.
